This maps shows vertical wind shear, which is a change in wind speed with change in altitude. Our map calculate the change in wind throughout the 0-6km layer. Thunderstorms tend to become more organized and persistent as vertical shear increases. Values less than 10 m/s are low, between 10 m/s to 20 m/s are moderate, and over 20 m/s are high (enough for supercells). In weak shear environment (up to 10 or 15 m/s), mostly multicells are developing and significant organisation of thunderstorms is not easy. In stronger shear environment (above approx. 15 m/s) probability of supercell development is increasing.
